There are so many foods out there today getting hyped as the new “super food”. The truth is no one food can create a healthy diet. The trick is to eat a variety of healthy foods most of the time and in enough quantities so that they’ll actually start to make a difference in how you look and feel.
Chia seeds are one of those foods that give you a big bang for your buck and by that I mean they’re low in calories and high in nutrition. Theses tiny black seeds are from the plant Salvia Hispanica, which is related to the mint. They grow natively in South America and were an important food for the Aztecs and Mayans back in the day. “Chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.”
Chia seeds are filled with nutrients just 1 ounce or 2 tablespoons contains 4 grams of protein, 11 grams of fiber and 5 grams of the healthy omega 3 fatty acids. This is the kind of food you want to be eating more of and it’s easy to do.
”Chia seeds taste delicious sprinkled in cereal, eggs or over salad. You can add them to muffins or pancakes and my favorite is adding them to smoothies(see recipe below). When you add the seeds to liquid they actually plump up so they give your smoothie a thicker consistency.
I buy my chia seeds in bulk and leave them in a pitcher on my counter so I remember to use them. Try some chia seeds in your next meal. I guarantee you’ll love them!
- 1/2 cup of berries(any kind you like)
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup of spinach
- 1 tbs of chia seeds
- 1 cup of water or almond milk
